Suppose your group is riding in medium traffic, on roads with poor shoulders. For a total distance of 30 miles, what's the suitable distance for each turn in front?

Also: when the front guy doesn't peel off, and he is leading the ride, does this mean he wants to be in front?

Right, because it's usually unsaid, right? There's a lot of politics and gamesmanship in some cycling groups.
