Hella, an automotive supplier in Plymouth, is working with Germany-based Paul Vahle GmbH & Co., a supplier of mobile power and data transmission, to develop wireless charging systems for electric vehicles.

As wireless charging has become more available and easy to use, it also might allow automakers to reduce battery size and weight on electric vehicles, says says Marc Rosenmayr, CEO for Hella Electronics in North and South America

Rosenmayr adds that if inductive charging coils were embedded in streets, EVs also could be recharged when stopped at traffic lights or even while being driven.

The next step is developing standards for #wireless #charging to ensure the stations are compatible between various EVs, as well as different charging station designs. “We are working together with SAE International to establish universal standards to ensure that all systems, both stationary and onboard vehicles, are able to communicate and work together,” Rosenmayr says

The overall project is slated for advanced engineering with a customer, possibly as early as the summer of 2014. “We’re getting requests in Europe for a start of production in 2016,” says Alan Brown, Systems Engineer at Hella Electronics
